Are you interested in becoming a flood insurance adjuster? You would be able to assess insurance claims for flood damages. Flooding is a problem that affects many of folks every year. As anyone who watches the news will tell you, seemingly every year, there is a big hurricane, tsunami, dam break, or some other water disaster. Flooding often causes massive damages to the areas it hits.

Businesses and homes alike can be completely destroyed by flooding. The initial surge of water can ruin furniture and electronic equipment, but even after the waters recede, mold damage could mean the entire affected building will need to be gutted. Flooding can rack up all kinds of damages; more and more Americans are coming to understand the necessity of flood insurance. Many Americans have found out the hard way that, usually, coverage of flood damage is not under their homeowner's policy.

One major point of interest in American flood insurance is the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This is a community-based program which gives property owners the option to purchase insurance from the federal government. Areas that are open to NFIP coverage must fall into certain criteria as defined by a federally-managed flood insurance rate map (also known as FIRMs). Properties in high risk areas on the community's FIRM are usually required to purchase flood insurance through the NFIP.

As with most dealings with federal programs, knowledge of the specifics of NFIP's coverage requires a significant amount of training. In order to facilitate smooth operations when handling NFIP claims, all flood insurance adjusters must be certified through the NFIP Bureau, and the larger umbrella of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This federal certification is required even for flood insurance adjusters who are working for private insurers. NFIP keeps a database of all adjusters in the flood insurance industry.

Certification as an adjuster requires a few different things, but the big component is attendance of NFIP Claims Presentations. In order to apply for the certification, all potential flood insurance adjusters must have attended one of these workshops prior to application. Furthermore, anyone who successfully receives their certification must attend one of these claims workshops every year in order to maintain certification. NFIP hosts these workshops throughout the country at various points throughout the year. These workshops tend to be scheduled outside of hurricane season, which is the busiest time for the flood insurance industry.
